CONCLUSIONS: Arcanobacterium haemolyticum infection should be considered in the differential diagnosis when evaluating a young adult with an exanthem. Antibiotic treatment is reliably efficacious, but the throat swab must be specifically cultured on 5% human blood agar in order to make the diagnosis. Arcanobacterium haemolyticum (A.h.) was recovered from 0.43% of throat cultures of 3715 patients with sore throat, scarlatina and various skin rash. In a 57.90% patients A.h. was the only bacterial pathogen isolated, while in the remainder beta-haemolytic streptococci, Haemophilus and S. aureus were ….

Fever, headache, fatigue, and malaise are variably present. The specific microbiologic cause of pharyngitis can rarely be distinguished based on clinical features alone. 1996-02-15 · A. haemolyticum is reported as an in- frequent cause of peiitonsiDar abscess, pharyngitis, and tonsiDitis in children and young adults (>4). It was cultured from 12 of 129 children with pharyngotonsilli tis or scarlet fever, some of whom had a scarletiniforrn rash (5). Arcanobacterium haemolyticum is an uncommon cause of pharyngitis with rash that occurs predominantly among adolescents and that has been only rarely implicated in severe or systemic infections.

This case is the first to be reported in Costa Rica. A haemolyticum exhibits variable susceptibility to penicillin and is identified more easily on human or rabbit blood agar than on sheep agar, the media traditionally used to identify GABHS.

The great majority of the patients suffered from pharyngitis or tonsillitis, accompanied by a rash in 46% of cases. One third of the patients had a history of recurrent tonsillitis. Acute pharyngitis attributable to Arcanobacterium haemolyticum often is indistinguishable from that caused by group A streptococci.

Arcanobacterium haemolyticum has an established role in the etiology of human pharyngitis. There are increasing reports of systemic infections caused by this organism.
The probable mode of infection is also discussed. The role of A. hemolyticum as an animal
Rhodococcus equi and Arcanobacterium haemolyticum, formerly classified in the genus Corynebacterium, are members of the loosely defined taxon "coryneform" bacteria. Although they are the etiologic agents of distinct human infections, both organisms are frequently overlooked, which results in missed or delayed diagnoses. 2021-04-11 · Arcanobacterium haemolyticum was recovered from 0.5% of throat cultures of 3,922 patients seeking medical attention because of sore throat.
